Sherpa Blankets

Are you looking for a gift that everyone will love? This idea will “cover” so many gift needs (pun intended). Just about everyone uses blankets, so why not consider a Sherpa blanket!

What is a Sherpa blanket?

Well, let’s start with the word “Sherpa” and work from there.

Sherpas were/are tribal people of Nepal, who live and work in the mountainous area of the eastern Himalayas. This region is near Mount Everest, so these people know what it means to be cold. Many have acted as guides to climbers of Mt. Everest.

To stay warm, they learned to utilize the hides of sheep, which are soft and woolly. The hides repelled moisture, keeping them dry (there is natural lanolin in sheep’s wool) and warm.

American manufacturers Collins & Aikman developed a special fabric and registered the “Sherpa” name and trademark.

While wool can be scratchy to some, this manufactured creation is as soft as can be, to the point of being luxurious. Often, it is bumpy on one side and smooth on the other, resembling a sheep’s hide. It is made of cotton, polyester, or a combination.

Sherpa is sometimes confused with fleece. Fleece, while also popular, is not as warm or soft as Sherpa fabric.

Sherpa blankets are so attractive, that you will want to have them on top of beds or on furniture. However, we also use ours as a regular blanket on our bed. We have found that we don’t need so many blankets, even in snowy winter, when using them.

Fortunately for gift-givers, textile manufacturers have embraced Sherpa fabric; blankets and they are wildly popular gifts. We have organized selections into several categories to assist you in making the difficult choice of which one to purchase.

Luxurious Blankets

Blankets in this category can not only be for warmth, but for decorating your room. Think of them as an accessory, like the way the perfect scarf ties together an outfit.

We are crazy about this Bedsure Faux Fur Throw Blanket, especially in the dark grey (shown). Doesn’t it look amazing, draped over the leather chair? Talk about the epitome of luxury.

Washing and Drying Sherpa Blankets

Sherpa blankets are very durable, so long as you follow washing instructions. For most, this means washing them in cold water. Drying can be a bit trickier. Some blankets advise letting them hang dry; some say a low tumble-dry setting works fine. Consult your manufacturer’s directions. Do not iron Sherpa blankets. Not only is there no need, but it is not recommended. Do not dry clean Sherpa blankets.

When clean and ready to be put away (unless your Sherpa blanket is just too pretty or cool to put away), do you know how to properly fold a blanket? We didn’t, but we do, now, thanks to this helpful video.

Napping and Sherpas

Is there anything wrong with snuggling with a Sherpa for a quick nap? Probably not . . . but from Webmd.com, here are some napping tips:

“What’s the best way to take a nap?

To get the most out of a nap, follow these tips:

  • Keep naps short. Aim to nap for only 10 to 20 minutes. The longer you nap, the more likely you are to feel groggy afterward. However, young adults might be able to tolerate longer naps.
  • Take naps in the early afternoon. Napping after 3 p.m. can interfere with nighttime sleep. Individual factors, such as your need for sleep, your sleeping schedule, your age, and your medication use, also can play a role in determining the best time of day to nap.
  • Create a restful environment. Nap in a quiet, dark place with a comfortable room temperature and few distractions.

After napping, give yourself time to wake up before resuming activities – particularly those that require a quick or sharp response.”

We would add: Use Sherpa blankets for optimal napping. Just kidding.

Gift Presentation

Blankets are so easy to give. We like to roll them up, tie them with a ribbon, and pop them into a gift bag with tissue paper.

Whether your recipient is looking for luxurious, casual, funny, or wearable Sherpa blankets, there truly is something for everyone, isn’t there. Have fun shopping and selecting that perfect gift — even if it’s a well-deserved gift for you!
